Background on host institution
Phu Lam College is a technical and economic college, recently upgraded from high school, so graduates now need
higher skills than technical workers. The college supplies these skills, including a command of
English. The English teachers are good, but need to improve their own speaking and listening
skills. It is fully state run and has 5,000 students. The students tend to be rather lively and in class
volunteers will be accompanied by a teacher.! There are 20 English teachers, of whom 3 are men.
Students are aged from 16-18 and major in Engineering, but cannot major without English. They also have evening
classes for mature students.
Volunteers will work with students and, especially, staff to improve their conversational and listening
skills. Materials will be supplied. Some familiarity with vocabulary of a mildly technical nature may
be useful with the senior students. The juniors will be seeking to acquire simple conversational skills.
